Fire

If there is a fire in your work area, follow these guidelines:

  • If you have been trained and are able to safely extinguish the fire, do so. However, make sure that you have a safe exit from the fire area.

  • If you are unable to extinguish the fire, leave the area immediately and pull the fire alarm. From a safe location, call 911 or 348-5454 to report the fire.

  • Evacuate the building as soon as the alarm sounds.

  • On your way out, warn others nearby.

  • Move away from fire and smoke. Close doors and windows if time permits.

  • Touch closed doors. Do not open them if they are hot.

  • Use stairs only; do not use elevators.

  • Move well away from the building and go to your building's designated Emergency Assembly Area.

  • Do not re-enter the building or work area until you have been instructed to do so by the emergency responders.

Power Outages

In the event of a major utility failure, notify Facilities Services at 205-348-6001 during working hours, or on weekends and holidays notify the University Police at 205-348-5454.

Evacuate the building if the fire alarm sounds and/or upon notification by the police

A major power outage may not in itself be destructive, but a possible resulting panic or fire could endanger life and property. Panic can be partially avoided by an immediate decision on the need to cancel classes or meetings in progress or to evacuate the building.

Emergency Contact Numbers

To report an emergency, call 911

From a cell phone, you may call the University of Alabama Police directly at 205-348-5454.

Calling 911 from a cell phone reaches the neighboring public safety centers depending on the location of the cell tower that received your call. The center will then transfer the call to the appropriate agency, including The University of Alabama Police if it is an on-campus incident.

For convenience, some people program the University’s Police phone number into their cell phones.
